Aware Fish Identification
There are over 21,000 Species of Fish in the world. Which ones did you see on your last dive? The PADI AWARE Fish ID specialty will introduce you to some of the fish species you are likely to see on a dive in the Pacific NW. You will learn a few simple ways to identify the most common fish as well as ways to identify unfamiliar fish. It will also provide you with the knowledge needed to conduct fish counts for REEF, which will allow you to contribute to the understanding and conservation of the aquatic environment.
Why Aware Fish Identification?
This course will introduce you to the most common fish families and species found in temperate and tropical waters. You'll also learn basic fish identification and scientific survey techniques as well as how important personal involvement is in aquatic conservation.
What will I do?
During the classroom session we will familiarize you with common Northwest fish species and discuss ways to identify unfamiliar fish. We will also look at the various guidebooks and other resources available. Finally, we will familiarize you with REEF survey techniques and the material available from REEF.
How long will it take?
1 Knowledge Review session and 1 day of diving
What do I need to start?
- PADI Open Water or Jr. Open Water Diver
- Minimum age: 10

Become a Master Scuba Diver?
Show off your training and knowledge by receiving the Master Scuba Diver certification. This is the highest recreational diver level in the PADI system of diver education. It indicates you have received a significant amount of training and experience in a variety of dive environments. Completing this specialty brings you one step closer to achieving this sought after certification.
