Underwater Naturalist

If you're interested in aquatic life then the PADI Underwater Naturalist Specialty course is for you. This course is an introduction to the underwater aquatic environment and will help develop safe and responsible aquatic life interaction techniques. During your PADI Underwater Naturalist Specialty course, you'll learn underwater naturalist dive planning, organization, procedures, techniques and potential problems. You'll also get an overview of the major aquatic life groupings, interactions and factual information that dispels negative myths. Course includes two dives and requires Open Water Diver certification and a minimum age of 10.

Why Underwater Naturalist?

What do I need to start?

  • PADI Open Water Diver or Junior Open Water Diver certification (or qualifying certification from another organization)
  • Minimum age: 10 years old

What will I do?

During your PADI Underwater Naturalist Specialty course, you'll learn underwater naturalist dive planning, organization, procedures, techniques and potential problems. You'll also get an overview of the major aquatic life groupings, interactions and factual information that dispels negative myths. You'll put this information into practice during your two open water dives.

How long will it take?

  • Recommended Course Hours: 12
  • Minimum Open Water Training: two open water dives over one day

Where can I go from here?

Your Adventures In Diving Underwater Naturalist Adventure Dive may count towards your Underwater Naturalist Specialty course at instructor discretion. This Specialty course also counts toward one of the five required Specialties for the Master Scuba Diver rating. To learn more about the aquatic life in your area, stop by your local PADI Dive Center or Resort to enroll.

Become a Master Scuba Diver?

Show off your training and knowledge by receiving the Master Scuba Diver certification. This is the highest recreational diver level in the PADI system of diver education. It indicates you have received a significant amount of training and experience in a variety of dive environments. Completing this specialty brings you one step closer to achieving this sought after certification.
